Condition of the factory before the project implementation
- Units H1 and H3 are over 30 years old, so they are degraded, difficult to operate and cannot meet the current demand.
- The speed control system of units H1 and H3 is designed by old technology, so it is very difficult to find replacement and repair components.
- Units H1, H3 of Song Pha hydropower plant with a small capacity of 1.5 MW are not currently required to perform primary frequency regulation, however, according to the requirements of dispatching levels, the plant also needs to be available. ready the primary frequency control function and control modes as another modern speed regulation system, to put this function into operation immediately upon request from dispatching levels in the future.

Results, evaluation after upgrading the speed control system of units H1 and H3
After the project, Song Pha hydropower plant was equipped with a new speed control system for units H1, H3. When put into operation, it can be seen that the existing problems of the plant have been improved clearly, the efficiency is shown by:
- The new speed control system works quickly, shortening the startup time.
- The factory’s additional design of Modbus communication with DCS helps to increase the ability to monitor and control the governor system from DCS: direct power from DCS through communication, this direct power setting control mode (MW mode) in parallel with DCS (ALR mode) pulse control mode, so the operator can easily select MW mode to put power directly into the speed control system through Modbus communication or use the same pulse control mode (ALR mode).
- Units H1 and H3 are equipped with primary frequency modulation for future backup, so whenever there is a request to participate in primary frequency control, units H1, H3 are ready immediately. .
- The experimental results show that the load shedding when cutting the machine, cutting the pole or simulating the cutting of the grid cutter, the unit responds well, and at the same time does not exceed the large capacity (< 140%) compared to the system without upgrade.
